Kitchen Sink Lighting – Lighting Up a Crucial Activity Area

Kitchens need different kinds of lighting, namely overall ambient lighting, task lighting for specific activity areas and accent or decorative lighting to highlight certain areas.

For the kitchen sink it is task lighting that you need to carry out a very important activity here – cleaning your dishes. You need to see whether the cleaning activity is done properly to ensure the health of your family and to make mealtimes a pleasant experience.

The usual trend is to place a fluorescent light fixture above the sink. These energy efficient lights illuminate the kitchen sink area adequately. For large kitchens that aim for a bolder look, pendant light fixtures in the form of mini-chandeliers can look quite decorative. With the huge variety available in pendant lights, you can easily choose the ones that match the style of your sink and kitchen cabinets.

Lighting Layout for Your Kitchen Sink

At the planning stage in your kitchen lighting consider having two light sources above the kitchen sink, especially if it is large. If there is only one light directly above the kitchen, each time you bend over to work, you will see dark shadows.

The solution here is to install two light sources that are at least 45 centimeters apart if you have a kitchen sink that is around three feet wide. Positioned this way, these lights will balance each other and provide shadow free lighting when you work at the kitchen sink.

Kitchen sink lighting can be recessed lighting or track lighting fixtures, although it might be a good idea to fix a couple of stylish decorative lights. However, take the appropriate precautions when installing recessed lighting with an insulated ceiling.

When you go shopping for kitchen sink lighting, the lighting store will usually ask you to measure the distance between your kitchen sink and the point where you intend fixing your lights since you might need to look at different options based on this measurement.

If the distance between your lighting fixture and the kitchen sink is more, then you need more light. If your ceiling also happens be high, you may want to think about fixing a couple of dropped pendant light fixtures that are decorative, so that your kitchen sink gets the maximum light.

High efficiency lamps and fixtures like compact fluorescent lamps or CFL are the most popular options for kitchen sink lighting. Do not forget to have controls in the form of dimmers for increased performance. Proper lighting in the kitchen improves efficiency and hence it is important to choose the right design to get the best results.
